Southern Dreams Homestead – Who We Are
Welcome to “Southern Dreams Homestead!” We are Jessie and Patrick, and we currently live in the suburbs of Georgia.
As odd as it may seem, we met on Tinder (yes, really!) in August of 2019, knew we were meant to be, and are now engaged to be married in March of 2023!
Total, we have 4 children (2 living at home with us) and 3 dogs. We’re not having more children, but we’ll eventually expand our family with more animals.
We are working on building our dream of being as self-sufficient and debt-free as we possibly can be to further our goals of becoming homestead gurus. It’s a long row to hoe, but we’re both stubborn as mules in that when we’ve decided to do something, we’re going to do everything in our power to make it happen!
We actually started “Southern Dreams Homestead” in April of 2020 under the name “Chaotic Healthy,” and planted our first garden together.
From “Chaotic Healthy” to “Southern Dreams Homestead”
“Chaotic Healthy” was a way we saw our lives at the time. With two special needs children, life is nothing short of chaotic (though more chaotic neutral instead of chaotic anything-else (that’s a Dungeons & Dragons reference for our nerd friends out there)). They’re a pair to beat any full house you’ve ever seen, and Mac and Maggi both love each other no matter what!
The “healthy” part of that came from the fact that we both know we’re overweight, and we want to do something to change that. We had been doing Keto eating for a while, but when the pandemic hit, all bets were off. We’re trying to get back to that mindset, but some days are much harder than others.
We figured “Chaotic Healthy” sounded too rigid and aggressive, so we wanted to change the name. We were sitting around the house here in Georgia one day, dreaming up new names, when Jessie hit a winner! “We’re Southerners dreaming of the perfect (for us) homestead life, right?”
…and thus “Southern Dreams Homestead” was official.
We’ve rebranded, and we couldn’t be happier with the new name!
What We’re Dreaming About
I mentioned earlier that we’re “…dreaming of the perfect (for us) homestead life…,” so I wanted to explain that a little.
“Perfection is the enemy of progress.” – Winston Churchill
“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” – Vince Lombardi
To us, the notion of perfection isn’t about having every little thing go flawlessly every day. To us, it’s about having what we need to fully provide for our family in a manner that is comfortable and sustainable. That’s the “perfect homestead life.”
We don’t need 40 acres. We don’t need multiple herds of animals (though they will come in time).
We’re just looking to be able to do something productive for our family. Grow some food, admire nature, and build something we can all call home.
Lately, we’ve gotten a few books from friends about homesteading topics. If you’re interested in what we’re reading right now, check these out:

Where We Are vs Where We Want To Be
Right now, we’re renting a house, so we’re limited on what we can do. With that in mind, we’re holding ourselves back a little from what we want to do. None of this is permanent. We’re just making the most of what we have right now, and learning along the way.
We’re looking for 10+ acres in Patrick’s hometown in Georgia. We want to be able to have chickens, pigs, goats, and maybe even a cow down the line. We’d love to have large garden areas and plenty of room for family gatherings. We want to build a place where our future grandchildren will find magical when they visit.
We’d love to be able to get up in the morning and make plans for our day as we enjoy our coffee together outside overlooking the “back 40” (which is what we lovingly call our back yard, despite the acreage). We want to envision the next step of our homestead on a piece of property we can truly call our own. Trying to be as self-reliant as possible, we would also love to one day have solar panels, a well, and an in-ground root cellar (or at least a climate controlled basement).
But all that will come in time.
For now, we’re happy just being together, writing some blog posts, making some YouTube videos, and loving our family unit.
We’re also happy you’re here to enjoy it all with us! Feel free to Contact Us if you have any questions or ideas!
